Technology Certification Program launched for Data Back-up and Recovery Infrastructures
Storage procurement decisions can now be based on real-world performance metrics.
Maidenhead, Berkshire, UK, 3rd August 2011: Butterfly Software, the intelligent analysis and migration specialist, has launched an industry standard technology certification program for data back-up and recovery infrastructures. Certification means that any potential storage environment can be fully analysed under real-world conditions to enable informed data migration decisions and avoid possible vendor lock-in.
“Data storage vendors often provide performance benchmark data for their storage systems. However, these benchmarks are theoretical and do not match real-world performance levels. The Butterfly technology certification program overcomes this issue”, commented Ian Smith, CTO Butterfly Software.
Technologies offered by new vendors, new products from existing vendors and/or software upgrades can be accredited under the program. The technology certification program is undertaken by the Butterfly product engineering team, an expert team drawn from a range of senior industry roles. This team becomes an organisation’s enterprise engineering team without the investment in additional staff and/or reallocation of existing resource.
The technology vendor provides access to their solution, complete with interoperability matrix and roadmap. Butterfly runs a series of performance measurement tools and information gathering interrogations, with all results based on empirical production data. Butterfly provides an independent assessment of the technology in terms of performance, replication, MTBF, manageability and scalability.
In terms of scalability, the technology certification recommends optimum scale out blocks. This ensures that the total storage requirement is achieved by adding additional independent data backup and recovery infrastructure, as opposed to augmenting a single, large infrastructure with incremental disk, processor, or memory resources.
Once a vendor’s technology has received certification it can then be accurately modeled and analysed for specific target implementations using the Butterfly Analysis Engine (AER). The solution can be sized and architected for cost, performance and capacity to fulfill the specific needs of your data back-up and recovery requirements.
