Tom Hughes

Chief Sales Officer

Tom Hughes is Chief Sales Officer for Butterfly Software, responsible for the global sales operation, and is the driving force behind the expansion of the Butterfly business. Tom has worked for over a decade with major technology vendors and systems integrators, delivering storage and backup solutions to major corporations. His focus is to drive company expansion by creating strategic relationships with the major storage and backup technology vendors. Tom is one of the co-founders of Butterfly Software in January 2009 (along  with CTO Ian Smith and COO Craig Moore).

Tom is instrumental in developing the global relationships that have enabled Butterfly to become a significant force with this market. He is responsible for negotiating agreements with Butterfly’s global partners, including IBM and Arrow Electronics.  Under Tom’s CSO stewardship, Butterfly has grown its market dramatically and is seen as a strategic partner by IBM.

Prior to starting Butterfly, Tom had an expansive career in the data storage arena, holding several senior sales and management positions at Unisys, EMC, Hitachi Data Systems and Source Consulting (now Glasshouse UK). Working in these corporate environments, Tom gathered significant experience in a wide range of disciplines, including the design, sale, implementation and management of complex IT infrastructures, applications and organisations.

At EMC, Tom was the Senior Director with executive responsibility for EMC’s UK based managed service business.  In this role Tom was responsible for the management of many customer storage and backup environments, including Capgemini, BP, The FT and EDS.  Here Tom came to understand the need to automate data migrations to enable technology enhancement, refresh and data mobility.  It was this experience that generated such excitement for Tom when he met Ian, the Butterfly CTO, and Butterfly was formed.

At EMC and other IT suppliers Tom has defined and launched global storage and information management lines and held management responsibility for the business information and critical systems of multiple enterprises, including NHS patient data.

It was his proven success and leadership combined with his innovative approach to sales and customer satisfaction within these companies that made Tom the ideal person to take on the role of CSO at Butterfly.
